My New Ride

Well, I took pictures on my Blackberry which is way too much of a pain to download to my computer, but I got a bike (!) for Mother's Day!

The kids have been really into riding ever since Spring Break when they rode all around the campsite where we camped out.  Since then their Dad has been riding them up to the store and around the neighborhood, but they all wanted me to be able to go along with them.  So I jumped up on my husband's bike last weekend, testing the waters after a 25-year hiatus and Meniere's disease, to see where my balance was.  I actually stayed vertical, so it was decided right then and there that "Mom needs a bike!!!"

We bought a bike this morning from Costco's new line, Northrock.  It is kind of like a dirt bike-light.  I rode it up and down the aisles at Costco before pulling the trigger.  After a few adjustments, we took a spin up to Starbuck's, Big 5, and around the 'hood.

Riding on the street is pretty good, but sidewalks and tight spaces are a little trickier.  I can't be sure if it is because I literally have not ridden a bike for 25 years or if it is subtle balance deficits from the MM.  I imagine it is the latter.  I feel like I am missing some fine motor skills in the balance department.  We figured riding a bike could do nothing except improve them, so I will keep at it.

Now I just need to get a basket 'cause it's hard to be a gangsta' with a basket on your bike.  This is a shout-out to Nicki! ;-)

  1. The video was a hoot. I'm still so shocked that I can hear things on my computer. The wonders of hearing aids!!

Congratulations on the new bike!! I've been tossing around the idea of getting one too. But it has been a while, and there isn't a great place to ride around here. It's not far to the store, but the road I've have to ride on is a bit dangerous for a bike.

Still inspiring me! (thank you for the sweet note on my blog. You really are inspiring.)

  2. aaaaaahhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!! you know i love it!!!!!!!!! you gotta get a basket and post a picture! loved the video. i can't believe his mike went out. i saw somewhere that he's got a show in your town on the 15th during the day. looks like he just had one on the 10th too. i know i've said it before but i'm living on the wrong coast!

i've been wanting to get a bike for a long time too. like wendy, there aren't many good places to just get out and ride here. but we do have an awesome greenway that is something like over 4 miles long and it has different places along the way for the kids to stop and play. it follows a river and it's so pretty. i need to just bite the bullet and go get one. i think i could do it. like you said, there may be some tough places, but i think we could adapt.

    have fun, gangsta!! :)

i'm so happy you've got a bike and are enjoying it. as i had said in my previous comment, you must get a basket and post a picture! :) i've been wanting to get a bike for years now but i've been hesitant to do so. i used to ride all the time and i miss it.

love the video!! let's see if this comment goes through...
